Highlights of his career
In February 2015 Kamaru Usman was announced as one of the members of reality show The Ultimate Fighter. This season was the first one featuring a team vs. team concept. Kamaru Usman was a member of now non-existent team Blackzillians. In his first fight in TUF Kamaru fought against Michael Graves and he almost lost this fight by rear naked choke. However Usman survived very dangerous submission attack and then was able to win by decision.
After that he faced very dangerous opponent in his semi-final fight, WSOF welterweight champion Stever Carl. But although the experiences of Stever Carl Usman was still able to get another decision win and even much easier than in his previous fight. He dominated all two rounds by his wrestling skills. In the final fight, Usman faced Hayder Hassan. After very successful first round, Usman finished this fight by arm triangle choke in the second round. He won The Ultimate Fighter, Six-figure contract with the UFC and 50 000 $ for performance of the night.
Amazing winning streak
Kamaru´s amazing winning streak started two years before his appearance in The Ultimate Fighter. Until that moment he had already fought in 6 fights. He won 5 of them and all of those wins came by TKO. After his only defeat in 2013 with Jose Caceres where he was submitted by rear naked choke, Usman was able to win 16 fights in the row including two fights in TUF. After his win in TUF he beat everyone who stepped with him into the octagon.
In the UFC Usman was able to smash opponents one by one with his amazing wrestling skills and his brilliant cardio. Kamaru´s cardio is one of the biggest in UFC history which means that he can easily torture his opponents all the time and win every single round in his fights. His specific fighting style makes him winning mostly by decision (8 wins by decision in UFC). He has defeated names like Maia, Dos Anjos, Meek or for example Edwards. And after all those fights he was successful even in the fight for the title against one of the most dominant champions Tyron Woodley.
The first Nigerian UFC champion
After 4 years in UFC Usman looked really unstoppable. He was 9-0 in UFC and there was no doubt about his performance in every single fight of his UFC career. And he is still getting better and better fight after fight. All those facts created Usman a position of challenger for Welterweight title. And he was challenging a long-time champion Tyron Woodley. Woodley was percieved as a big favourite and almost nobody was expecting Usman to win. But times change and Kamaru smashed Woodley in every single round. He rised as a new Welterweight champion and the first UFC champion in history of Nigeria.
Wrestling career during the high school
Almost no one knows about Usman´s wrestling background. He started to wrestle on high school when he was 15 years old. During this age Kamaru has build his wrestling skills and he started to compete on High School tournaments. When he finished school his wrestling record looked very impressive. 53 wins and just 3 loses. After that Usman moved to University in Iowa and after one year in Iowa he won NAIA national qualifier. A while after this success Usman was transferred to the University of Nebraska at Kearney and he helped this school to win its first-ever team title in 2008. His biggest success came in 2010 when he won NCAA division II and he became a national champion.
Beef with Colby Covington
Kamaru Usman is known very well because of his beef with Colby Covington. This beef started in 2018 when Covington fought against Dos Anjos for interim Welterweight title. At the press conference Usman called Covington weak and told him that he would need just 30% of his skills to beat him. This moment started rivalry between those guys. After that both of them were talking about each other in almost every interview.
