vs Urijah Faber
Urijah Faber fought back in July 2019 against Ricky Simon after 3-year long layoff due to retirement. Faber didn’t forget any of his skills and KO’ed Simon within the first minute of the first round, which granted him a Performance of the Night bonus. 40-year old Faber will stand against a formidable opponent in Petr Yan, a former ACB Bantamweight champion and currently riding an 8-fight winning streak. Petr Yan is currently ranked no. 4 and with an impressive win against Faber, he could be the next challenger for the bantamweight belt. Last time Yan fought was in June 2019, when he won by a razor-thin unanimous decision against a top bantamweight Jimmie Rivera.
Faber is well known amongst MMA fans, when he gained popularity during his stint with the WEC, where he was a featherweight champion. He is also known as a fighter, that was undefeated in non-title fights (before he suffered losses against Frankie Edgar and Jimmie Rivera), but never was able to reach the UFC gold. Faber is typical wrestling product from USA, when he was competing in the NCAA Division 1. When he is close enough to his opponent and gets the hold of him, it is highly probable, that a takedown will happen. Faber is very strong in the grappling area as apart being a former NCAA Division 1 wrestler he is also a BJJ brown belt under Fábio Prado. Whenever he sees and opening for submission, he does not hesitate to take it. Otherwise he likes to ground and pound. Being a founder and a member of Team Alpha Male, where their coaches have their own unique style of striking, he can strike very well. Faber has a really powerful overhand right, which could put anyone to sleep. His weaknesses are only a handful and it is very difficult to pick some weaknesses. The main problem for Faber could be age as he is not the youngest anymore and he might not keep with younger and faster opponents.
Yan is a young and hungry fighter coming out of Russia. He started his UFC career with 3 impressive wins, where he displayed high-level striking. Being a volume striker, he is not afraid to get hit and he is always looking to hit someone back with more and powerful strikes. His striking is on another level, he can box from the outside or even inside the pocket and his kicks are also very powerful. Yan uses variety of strikes such as spinning elbows, switch strikes, spinning backfists and more. He often switches his stances. He has not displayed many weaknesses as, he was dominant in almost every UFC fight.
This fight might need a judges’ decision, as it is believed that Yan will be the one to push the pace and Faber will be looking for takedowns. Faber is tough as nails, and he can take a beating. If this fight would actually go to the ground, Faber might be the favorite to win by submission, as he has 17 wins by submission. Even though Yan has only 1 submission win in the MMA career, he could also pull something from his hat, as Russians are in most cases very good in grappling. However, Yan is a favorite to win by KO, as he has so many tools to hit his opponents with and it is believed that he will be the faster and stronger fighter in this fight. Judges’ decision is the most likely outcome in favor of Yan, as every fight starts standing up and if Faber can’t get his takedown, it is trouble.
